Pattern Magic - Tomoko Nakamichi

This is my latest buy from Amazon 'Pattern Magic', a cult pattern-cutting book from Japan by Tomoko Nakamichi. inspiration taken from nature, geometric shapes, and from the street, this book gives the joy of making and sculpting clothes. It gives you step-by-step instructions to different fabric manipulations. I am looking forward to experimenting!!

Maurizio Anzeri Exhibition

 I visited a Maurizio Anzeri Exhibition at The Baltic not so long ago. He uses various materials in his work, and his main starting point is the human body. The exhibition was Anzeri's first solo exhibition in the UK, bringing together a group of his recent work that combines found photographs and embroidery. Here are some photographs of his work I took at the exhibition;

Kate Usher Wallpaper - Design Development

 For my current module I was given a challenge to develop a collection of luxury wall coverings for northeast based design company 'Kate Usher Studio'. Kate Usher Studio is more famous for its quirky and fun, hand drawn, painted or sketched children's wall coverings. I was given two themes to chose from, generated by the head designer Kate Usher, and I decided to design a collection of quirky and inspirational child's wall coverings for junior.
The theme I decided to go for was 'Traditional British Holidays' so i started to research a group of things such as; ice cream sundaes, traditional sweet jars, amusements, rock, traditional carousels, punch and judy and plenty other things that linked with British Holidays.
Here are some of my design developments of my wallpapers produced on photoshop for slick and clean outcome. I have been working on these towards my final three wallpaper designs in the work of Kate Usher. I decided to use beach huts, ice creams as two of my designs shown below and my third design is using different fairground rides, and tokens.

 These are two of my first wallpaper designs using beach huts, I scanned in my original drawings of the beach huts and then played with colour and scale on photoshop, taking colours from my chosen colour palette; pink, green, yellow, orange, blue, and brown/cream. I then started to produce a drop repeat pattern to produce a quirky feel to the wallpaper.

 Once I had played with colour and scale of the beach huts, I then decided to change the background of the wallpaper, my inspiration came from the wood pannels on the beach huts themselves. I feel that this background works a lot better with the design as it doesn't make the design look as flat and dull.

 This is my second wallpaper design that I started to produce on photoshop after scanning in my original drawings of different ice creams and sundaes. I played with the colour and scale once again sticking to my chosen colour palette. For this design I just stuck to a simple horizontal pattern repeat.

This was my second design using ice creams and sundaes. For this design I used a drop repeat pattern. I felt as though this design was a lot quirkier than that straight horizontal repeat as the pattern is scattered and has a more messy feel.

A third design using ice creams and sundaes, once again changing the pattern of the design. This time I produced a straight horizontal repeat but then flipped the line underneath. In the end I didn't have much likeness for this design.

These are my third wallpaper design that I started to produce on photoshop after scanning in my original drawings of different fairground rides and ride tokens. For these two designs I used drop repeat.

Wearable Art

Photographs of my final outcome; wearable art in a Gothic style. To produce this outcome I joint various different materials together to form a neck piece. I took my inspiration from designer Rowan Mersh, who uses a lot of fabric manipulation in his work. Here are some examples;

Here are some photographs of my final outcome;

I started to add tassels of different types of material such as lace and velvet, inspired from Mersh's work.
